This session will teach our AAPM&R community several tools for process and quality improvement (PI, QI) through real world examples from industry and PM&R practices. From improving patient wait times to improving outcomes, our goal is to help fill the physiatrist “tool box" so that each practitioner is capable of tackling any QI or PI initiative within their practice. This session will follow three main educational domains: Teaching the Tools, Using the Tools, and Practical Incorporation of Tools into Practice. Attendees will be exposed to the PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act) and DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) frameworks of process analysis. Education will surround the use of business-proven tools used in each step, which will enable the physiatrist to approach their QI and PI initiatives in a systematic way and help them experience more success. Additionally, a large case will be presented highlighting the effective use of some of these tools within an inpatient PM&R practice. Furthermore, we will discuss how the practical use of these tools can extend beyond MOC IV requirements and towards improving physician satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and quality of care. At the completion of the session, there will be time set aside for Q&A and discussion.

Learning Objectives

  • Match process improvement tools with their use within the DMAIC and PDSA frameworks.
  • Identify ways to reduce errors and waste within a process.
  • Identify areas of improvement within their practice or process.
